FAQs

Does the Berkefeld Ultra Sterasyl ceramic replacement cartridge fit in my Berkey?
Yes. The ceramic replacement filter fits in the Travel, Big, Royal, Imperial and Crown Berkey.  We recommend using 2 filters in your Travel Berkey, and 4 filters in your Big or Royal Berkey.  Using 4 filters vs 2 will allow your system to filter your water twice as fast and the filters will last twice as long.  You may use 6 in your Imperial and 8 in your Crown system.

What contaminants do the Ultra Sterasyl ceramic gravity filters remove?
The Ultra Sterasyl replacement gravity filters by British Berkefeld are NSF certified. They protect against chlorine, lead, heavy metals, chemicals, PFAS (PFOS & PFOA), pesticides, pharmaceuticals, micro-plastics, bacteria, and cysts.  3rd Party Lab Tests:

Ultra Sterasyl Filters are NSF Certified In the United States, NSF International (formerly the National Sanitation Foundation) works to protect consumers by providing third-party testing, written standards, and validation of products available to the public.

Do the Ultra Sterasyl ceramic filters need to be primed?
No. The Ultra Sterasyl filters do not require priming.  Do not Prime or they can crack.  NOTE:  Run at least 5 full cycles of water through your filters to flush them out and achieve full filtration speed.

What is the filtration speed compared to the Black Berkey elements?
These are slower as the micro-pores are smaller.  After 5 full cycles of water through your Berkey they will achieve their full speed of filtration which is about 1 liter per hour, per filter.  That is why we recommend using 4 filters = 4 liters per hour.

How often should the Ultra Sterasyl ceramic filters be replaced?
2 filters lifespan: 3000 Liters (800 Gallons).  This is about 6 months if filtering 16 liters per day and 12 months if filtering 8 liters per day.  Using 4 filters vs 2 enables your system to filter water twice as fast and the filters will last twice as long.

Can I use red food colouring to test ceramic gravity filters?
No.

Do British Berkefeld filters also purify water of micro-organisms such as bacteria?
Yes. British Berkefeld has specialized in and perfected the use of ceramic filters for water purification for almost 200 years. Purification refers to the removal of micro-organisms.  0.2 microns.

If I am away for a week or more, what should I do with my filters?
Empty both chambers and leave the lid off to let the ceramic filters dry.  Do not let them freeze or they will crack and break.  When you get back home, wash your lower chamber and spigot with soap and water, then rinse.  You may now fill your upper chamber and begin enjoying your healthful filtered water again.  Remember to wash and rinse your lower chamber and spigot monthly to keep them clean and sterilized.

How long can I store unused ceramic filters?
As long as they have never been used, you can store unused ceramic Berkefeld filters indefinitely in a clean, dry location. Place your filters inside a ziplock bag to prevent them from absorbing airborne contaminants and odours.

How often should I clean my Ultra Sterasyl ceramic filters?
Cleaning frequency will be determined by your local water conditions. As the white ceramic becomes increasingly discoloured, the flow rate through the filter will diminish. When the flow rate becomes annoyingly slow, remove the cartridges from the housing. Hold each one under cool running water and scrub the discolouration off the surface of the white ceramic.  Use a scotch-brite pad or kitchen brush, something abrasive. Reinstall the cartridges and resume use.  Enjoy!
